We are living life asking ourselves the wrong question

We are living life asking ourselves the wrong question

We arrived back home after a very special summer together as a family. And even though I was still completely lost—without a clue about what I was going to do next with my life—I was finally okay with it.

It was time to find out, though. So I did what I had learned to do in times of deep confusion: I set my alarm for 5:00 a.m. and headed to the backyard in the quiet darkness of early morning.

I laid down on my mat, with Joe Dispenza’s meditation playing softly in the background, and gently closed my eyes. I set the simplest yet deepest of intentions: Show me what I’m here for.

To my surprise, after two full hours, absolutely nothing came up. No breakthrough. No message. Just stillness.

So I walked back into the house, had breakfast with my wife and kids, and sent them off to school with a five-minute dance party.

Yes, you read that right—a dance party.

I didn’t even recognize myself. I had come a very long way from those dark, heavy days lying in bed, depressed and hopeless. This transformation hadn’t come easy. It was the result of the hardest work I’ve ever done—the deep, uncomfortable, gut-wrenching personal, therapeutic, and spiritual work that most people never give themselves the time or permission to do.

After the fragile state I had been in, this inner work wasn’t a luxury—it was my only remaining lifeline.

The next morning, at 5:00 a.m. sharp, I was back on the mat. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months. Strangely, I began to enjoy these two-hour meditations. Slowly but surely, clarity started to trickle in.

The visions became more vivid. Children. Schools. Mental health. Education. The unnecessary suffering so many of us endure. These meditations often felt more real than “real life” itself. The message was becoming clear: everything was guiding me toward the intersection of Education and Mental Health. That’s when I learned that clarity doesn’t shout—it whispers.

Then, one ordinary day, something extraordinary happened. I received a message requesting a meeting from the CEO of Opción Yo—a mental health and emotional wellness company dedicated to helping Spanish speakers around the world live better lives. It didn’t feel like a coincidence. It felt like a nudge from the universe. I agreed to meet with her.

She had heard about my personal story and entrepreneurial background, and within the first fifteen minutes of the meeting asked if I would consider (1) acquiring a majority stake in the company, and (2) help take it to the next level.

By then, I had learned to recognize that these synchronicities—not coincidences—are happening all around us, all the time. The problem is, most of us are too busy chasing our own plans that we completely miss the signs and the point of it all. We are living life asking ourselves the wrong question: What do I want from life? When the real question ought to be: What does life want from me?

Even though I had experience starting, scaling, and selling companies, I had never acquired one. Nor was I looking to. But I had learned to welcome surprises with open arms. And opportunities so deeply aligned with my own personal mission—like Opción Yo—don’t come around often.

Just weeks later, on September 18, 2022, Michelle and I landed in Asunción, Paraguay to begin due diligence.

Paraguay hadn’t been on any list of countries I wanted to visit—but the universe has its own itinerary. I brought with me my most trusted banker and advisor—my wife.

We each had our roles. I was there to evaluate the business. Michelle had the more important task: evaluating the integrity of the leadership team.

The four full days we spent with the Opción Yo leadership team were not just productive—they were meaningful, fun, and full of heart.

It was the first time I had encountered a leadership team that was genuinely in it for the impact, for the mission. They weren’t in it for ego, status, or money—they were in it to change lives. And they understood something critical: when your mission is big, bold, and serious… It's even more important to make room for fun and joy along the way.

I’ll never forget all of us squeezing into a small car meant for half as many people, laughing and sharing stories on our way to the bowling alley. We were a group of humble, ordinary people committed to an extraordinary purpose. It was beautiful.

(Side note: if you ever get the chance to visit Paraguay—take it. The food, especially the steak, was phenomenal. Between us all, we probably ate four entire cows—for less than the cost of a 10 ounce filet in New York. But even the steak paled in comparison to the warmth, generosity, and soul of the Paraguayan people.)

As our flight back to Miami took off, Michelle turned to me and asked, “Are you sure you want to buy a majority steak—I mean stake—in this company?”

In my ear, the voice of a wise teacher echoed: When you start living from Spirit, you no longer have choices.

I smiled and said to Michelle: "I don’t think we have a choice. We are not the ones choosing this path—It is choosing us.”

I had made a commitment to live differently—to let Spirit guide my biggest decisions. Not ego. Not over-analysis. Not spreadsheets or simulations. And when the universe aligns everything so seamlessly—far beyond anything you could have orchestrated on your own—there’s only one thing left to do: say YES, and jump in head first.

So we did.

Almost exactly three months later, the deal was completed and I became President of Opción Yo.

Looking back, I realize something profound: We can spend our entire lives chasing clarity outside of ourselves. Reading all the self-help books (I did that). Bingeing all the podcasts at 2x speed (guilty). But the truth is, the clarity we’re looking for is already inside of us. We just need to sit in silence long enough to make space for the clarity that has been inside of us all along to emerge.

It’s as if the universe whispered to me: “Finally! I’ve been trying to help you all along Abi, but you were so busy and confused that I didn’t know what to send you. I tried giving you everything I could think of, but nothing was hitting the mark. Thank you for finally gaining clarity and broadcasting a clear signal. Now that your signal is clear, I know exactly what to send you. Here you go.”

With immense gratitude,

Abi
